• Considering the time required for visa issuance, student visa applicants must submit their documents at least one week before the application deadline.
• Applicants wishing to apply for dormitory accommodation must receive admission approval before the dormitory application date.
• The re-registration period for continuing students will be announced separately.
• Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis, and the morning classes of the regular course may close earlier than the application deadline.

• Applicants must have at least a High school diploma  (GED and Homeschooling certificates are not accepted).

• If you hold a different visa that allows you to stay in Korea or wish to enroll for only one semester, you fall under the category of not applying for the D-4 visa.
• Students who wish to attend only one semester should enter Korea with either a K-ETA or, preferably, a C-3 (90-day) visa.

  • Submitted documents will NOT be returned under any circumstances.
    - So if you have only 1 original diploma, please make a copy of it and get an Apostille or notarization from the Korean embassy on copied document.
  • If the original document is not in Korean, English, Chinese, or Japanese, only documents with an apostilled or notarized translation and the original document will be accepted.
  • Documents uploaded to the online application must be in JPG or PDF format.
  • Students from Mainland China should refer to the Chinese website, as the required documents differ.
  • Students from Taiwan, Macau, and Hong Kong should refer to the English website.

• Students enrolled in the regular course will be assigned to an appropriate level and class based on their performance in the placement test (speaking and writing). Each class has about 13 students, and classes will not be opened if there are less than five students.
• Students registered at the Korean Language Institute must attend more than 80% of the total class hours to advance to the next level.
• Students who fail the same level twice will not be allowed to re-enroll in future courses at the Yonsei University Korean Language Institute.
• Generally, the regular 10-week course of the Korean Language Institute, totaling 200 hours of instruction, is equivalent to six academic credits by university standards. However, as regulations vary by institution, it is recommended to confirm the credit equivalency with your home university in advance.
• Since the 2022 academic year, foreign students enrolled at the institute are automatically covered by group insurance, so no separate insurance documents need to be submitted. However, international students holding a language training visa will be enrolled in the National Health Insurance after six months of residence, and the associated costs must be borne by the student.
• Students who have completed level 6 at the institute are eligible to apply for the Advanced Korean Course. This course consists of 2 hours of daily instruction, totaling 10 hours per week and 100 hours in total, and can be taken for up to two semesters. The overall academic schedule is the same as the regular course/university Korean course, and the tuition fee is 905,000 KRW. For inquiries, please contact yskliko@yonsei.ac.kr.

Level 1

• Able to fully learn and read and write Hangul.
• Understands basic pronunciation rules and can accurately pronounce initial, medial, and final consonants.
• Can comprehend and use basic Korean sentence structures, tense expressions, and methods of connecting sentences.
• Develops basic language skills necessary for daily life, such as greetings, self-introduction, ordering food, shopping, finding directions, using public transportation, and making phone calls.

Level 2

• Learns individual sounds and phonological rules of Korean, enabling accurate pronunciation within sentences.
• Moves from simple sentences to using complex sentences, including linked and embedded clauses.
• Can use honorifics, informal speech, and indirect speech appropriately in conversation.
• Communicates freely in daily life and resolves common issues.
• Understands simple aspects of everyday Korean culture.
• Acquires language skills necessary for topics like food, the post office, transportation, phone calls, travel, and household chores.

Level 3

• Develops communication skills necessary for everyday life in Korea.
• Practices speaking through 3-minute stories and role-playing to confidently express opinions and thoughts.
• Understands complex conversations and narratives with multiple paragraphs, broadens vocabulary, and gains insight into Korean society and thinking.
• Practices writing to express personal thoughts in prose and improves grammatical and vocabulary accuracy.

Level 4

• Builds on the basic grammar learned in Levels 1 to 3, enabling more diverse expressions.
• Expands vocabulary to include Sino-Korean words, deepening understanding of Korean thinking and culture.
• Gains the ability to speak in longer paragraphs, express opinions in detail, and write on everyday topics.
• Understands longer, more complex conversations and texts, acquiring knowledge of Korean society and culture.

Level 5

• Develops the ability to understand discourse in academic and specialized fields, such as humanities, social sciences, science, and the arts, and to express opinions logically.
• Understands current affairs materials, such as news and newspaper articles, and can express personal opinions on these topics.
• Learns vocabulary and expressions that convey the speaker’s emotions and feelings and uses them appropriately.
• Understands Korean values related to language, education, career and leisure, science and technology, economics, pop culture, traditions, nature and the environment, and family and society.

Level 6

• Freely utilizes Korean grammar to engage in complex and specialized activities.
• Expands vocabulary and learns Korean ways of thinking through specialized materials that reflect Korean society and culture.
• Develops language skills capable of participating in activities at the level of university lectures.

• Students enrolled in the regular course and university Korean course can apply for the following dormitories.
  - Currently, the available on-campus dormitories are SK Global House and International House, both located within a five-minute walk from the Korean Language Institute.
• Applicants who wish to apply for dormitories must receive their admission and have their student ID number generated before the dormitory application date, so please hurry with your application.
• SK Global House offers a choice between single and double rooms, while International House is exclusively for women and only offers double rooms.
• Dormitory accommodation is available for a maximum of two semesters (six months) and is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis to students who apply within the deadline.
• The dormitory fee is for one semester, in line with the duration of the Korean Language Institute's courses, and does not include meal costs.
• Smoking and drinking are prohibited in the dormitory. Violations of dormitory regulations may result in eviction, in which case the dormitory fee will not be refunded.

  • Log In:
    -ID: Korean Language Institute student number (e.g., 202486****)
    -Password: Date of birth (YYMMDD)
  • Click on the academic information system and select the dormitory (Sinchon) tab.
  • Enter required information such as personal details and guardian's contact information, and choose the dormitory type.
  • Check Acceptance: On the acceptance announcement date, log in to the Yonsei portal, click on the dormitory tab, and check the admission information.
  • Confirm Registration: Transfer the dormitory fee within the registration period
  • Check-In: Submit a copy of your passport and a tuberculosis test result (taken within the last two months).
